Captured in Kenya in 2000, he was tried and convicted in 2001, and is now incarcerated in Imralı prison, near Istanbul. In the aftermath of her being arrested together with fugitive boyfriend Kürşat Yılmaz (see full story below), Tuğba hanım was arraigned yesterday at a pre-trial hearing. And the state prosecutor's office revealed that it is seeking an 8 year jail term for the sexy model -- for harbouring a known criminal. Tugba's reply to the charge? "I didn't know that Kürşat bey was on the run." Mebbe so, mebbe not. Guess the court will decide that... (See photo-article at left.) Özay declared herself a 'Trademark' in 2002 -- and, despite sometimes suffering unflattering press coverage, she's been in steady demand on the fashion runways ever since. Always doing things 'her way', she's felt equally at ease appearing nearly naked in haute couture fashion shows or draped head-to-toe in orthodox religious garb for Islamic shows. As long as there's been money on offer, she's been there to snap it up -- pretty much marching to her own lucrative drummer, perhaps a little arrogantly. But, getting away with it... Oh... there was that one run-in with Custom's Police at İzmir Airport in 2003, when she flew into a rage and got arrested for it. But, afterwards, when she showed contriteness at the court hearing, she was let off with just a slap on the wrist. And, since then, she's bullied on without a serious reputational blemish, no matter how close to the wind she's sailed... But that may have all changed during the wee small hours of Sunday, 29 May 2005... Acting on an anonymous tip, police raided a private home that night in the Üsküdar district of İstanbul -- in search of the notorious gangland fugitive Kürşat Yılmaz. And they nabbed him all right, but that's not the end of the story... Because, it turned out that the house belonged to Tuğba hanım -- who was there at the time, alone with Yılmaz, locked in less-than decorous embrace. So police also took her into custody, for harboring a known criminal. (See left.) Held for questioning overnight, Özay was not in a good mood upon her release. "My private life belongs to only me. I don't have to explain myself to anybody," she barked at reporters. Not everyone agreed with her on that point, though... Because the very next day, she was summarily stripped of her 'duties' as CHP political party spokesperson -- which she'd so proudly numbered among her non-modeling achievements. (See her Showin' Off with CHP Party Chairman Deniz Baykal in happier times, at upper left.) Will her modeling career too be affected by this latest scandal? Mehmet Ağar griped publicly last week about the rumored fişleme (intelligence data base preparation) -- and this week Chairman of the Joint Chiefs dismissed it as an 'internal matter' involving misinterpreted procedures and a few overzealous junior officers for whom he took the blame, saying 'I'm in command. In the News: 29 January 2006 -- "I laugh at the Lesbian stories that are fabricated about me..." Berna Hanım (who was seen in her DJ booth during a recent gig in Holland openly lip-kissing a girlfriend) says she finds comic the claims that she's gay. "I kiss on the lips any person I love or like alot." Öztürk (who is tired of being referred to as Tarkan's baldız) said, "I want to be known by my own name. I'm an unreserved person, and lip-kissing is just a demonstration of affection for me. It doesn't matter whether it's a man or a women...If I like 'em, I kiss 'em on the lips. Outside of Istanbul, everybody likes me, and I hear compliments from everyone. I don't get the same reception from people in Istanbul." Considered as a 'black sheep' by fundamentalist Muslims and as an Islamic Martin Luther by moderate co-religionists, Öztürk's pronouncements against strict interpretations of Islam make headlines just about every time he opens his mouth in-country, or out. Last week in the German magazine 'Welt am Sonntag' he had harsh words for the Turkish ruling party (AKP) and its overzealous religious agenda. But he also had criticism for the opposition CHP (of which he was once a member) because of its lack of attention to religious constituents -- which costs the CHP dearly, in lost votes at election time. In the magazine's lead article (entitled 'Turkish Martin Luther criticizes Erdoğan's political philosophy'), Öztürk touted his own newly-formed HYP political party and its slogan, "Peace between reason and religion". But he also confused his secular followers somewhat, by suggesting the need for a more 'generous' attitude (on the part of secularists everywhere) concerning headcoverings for Islamic women and facial hair for military men -- which seemed to contradict his rigorously secular statements on these subjects, in the past. Is HYP party-leader Öztürk set on widening his religious constituency -- even if it means adulterating the principles that enabled him to capture the secular constituency he now enjoys?
