In any case, as can be seen in the following photo-article, these religious schools are flourishing again, with the full support of the ruling AKP government -- spearheaded by its Education Minister, Hüseyin Çelik. | İsrail (İsrailli, İbranice/Arapça) | Israel (an Israeli person/thing, the languages of Israel [Hebrew/Arabic]) | In the News: July 2004... The Turkish-Israeli relationship -- Is the honeymoon over? If not, then relations have at least been showing severe strain of late, ever since PM Erdoğan went on Turkish TV to proclaim as 'an act of Israeli state terrorism' the heliocopter rocket-fire assassination in March 2004 of squeeeky-voiced Palestinian Shiek Ahmed (Ahmet) Yassin (the aged quadraplegic who also happened to be the founder/leader of the Hamas terrorist group) -- as he emerged with a gang of cohorts from a Gaza City mosque after prayers. In fact, the once fairly robust relationship between Turkey and Israel (which greatly angered Arab States when first intitated by the energetic, business-promoting Turkish President Turgut Özal in the 1990's) has been slowly unravelling since Erdoğan's pro-Islamic AKP party came to power in 2003 -- after which business (and political) cooperation between the two nations soon began to decline. So, the Israeli assasination of Shiek Yassin (the Palestininans' premier non-particitating suicide bomb-squad strategist and tacticican) may have merely been the straw that broke the Turkish camel's back. Not least among Turkey's complaints about Isreal in recent months has been apparent Jewish support for a Kurdish State in Northern Iraq on the border with Turkey -- something which is anethema to the overwhelming majority of Turkish citizens, whatever their political persuasion. | |
