...are religious schools that have a murky official status in Turkey. Proponents say they are necessary in order to maintain the supply of Islamic-cleric 'overseers' [imams] to the country's 70,000+ mosques. Opponents say they breed Islamic fanaticism. In any case, as can be seen in the following photo-article, these religious schools are flourishing again, with the full support of the ruling AKP government -- spearheaded by its Education Minister, Hüseyin Çelik. The Lout [to his pal, as the two observe a pretty young English tourist]:
Lookee there. I don't understand these English people at all.

The Lout [continuing in the second panel]:
They write [the word] as 'COME', they say [the word] as 'KAM'...

The Lout [continuing in the third panel]:
So, then...How do they know that the [real] meaning is 'GEL'?
[Language-point note: 'GEL' is the Turkish imperative for the English imperative 'COME'.]

intihar saldırısısuicide attackIn the news: 19 November 2003... After the suicide bombing (15 November) of a Jewish synagogue in Istanbul (that killed 23 and wounded 303), the Religious-right newspaper Zaman quoted Turkish Prime Minister Erdoğan: "Those who want to send a message to our country or our government are defeating their own purpose, if they use terror. I tred on the Terrorist's message." Two days later, the terrorists struck Istanbul again -- with two, even deadlier, suicide bombings (26 dead and 450 wounded) of the British consulate (that killed the British Consul General) and a British-based bank (HSBC).

...a quasi-religious black nationalist organization founded in the 1930s in the USA. The chief developer of the movement was Elijah Muhammad. In the 1960s the movement gained national prominence through Malcolm X, Elijah Muhammad's spokesman -- but disagreements among the sect hierarchy led to Malcolm's formation of a rival sect. Violent disputes between the two sects probably contributed to Malcolm's assassination in 1965. In the late 1970s, the organization was renamed the American Muslim Mission, but it was disolved in 1985 in order to become a part of the worldwide orthodox Islamic community. Earlier, in 1978, Louis Farrakhan formed his own break-away sect that retained both the name and the founding principles of The Nation of Islam, based in New York City -- where he began preaching the importance of family, the need for blacks to develop their own economic resources, and the inherent wickedness of whites, particularly Jews. In 1995, Farrakhan rose to the height of his influence as the most prominent organizer of the "Million Man March" of African-American men in Washington, D.C. -- attended by several hundred thousand supporters.66

July 2004
In the News: July 2004... The Turkish-Israeli relationship -- Is the honeymoon over? If not, then relations have at least been showing severe strain of late, ever since PM Erdoğan went on Turkish TV to proclaim as 'an act of Israeli state terrorism' the heliocopter rocket-fire assassination in March 2004 of squeeeky-voiced Palestinian Shiek Ahmed (Ahmet) Yassin (the aged quadraplegic who also happened to be the founder/leader of the Hamas terrorist group) -- as he emerged with a gang of cohorts from a Gaza City mosque after prayers. In fact, the once fairly robust relationship between Turkey and Israel (which greatly angered Arab States when first intitated by the energetic, business-promoting Turkish President Turgut Özal in the 1990's) has been slowly unravelling since Erdoğan's pro-Islamic AKP party came to power in 2003 -- after which business (and political) cooperation between the two nations soon began to decline. So, the Israeli assasination of Shiek Yassin (the Palestininans' premier non-particitating suicide bomb-squad strategist and tacticican) may have merely been the straw that broke the Turkish camel's back. Not least among Turkey's complaints about Isreal in recent months has been apparent Jewish support for a Kurdish State in Northern Iraq on the border with Turkey -- something which is anethema to the overwhelming majority of Turkish citizens, whatever their political persuasion. I don't see much difference between Istanbul and the rest of the Middle East. Just as tourists rarely go to Israel, so it will be with Istanbul."
