GazzeGazaIt is the largest city of the Gaza Strip, in southwestern 'Palestine'. Gaza was the administrative headquarters for the Israeli military forces occupying the Gaza Strip from 1967 to 1994, at which time the Israelis began a phased withdrawal under the terms of the Israel-PLO accords.66

GDO
(Genetiği Değiştilmiş Organizma)
In English, GMO (Genetically Modified Organism) or GEO (Genetically Engineered Organism)...describes an organism whose genetic material is changed by genetic engineering methods. Such methodology, referred to as recombinant DNA technology, takes DNA particles from dissimilar sources, combines them into a single molecule, then uses them to create new genes. Such 'new' DNA is then transplanted into an organism, giving it modified genes -- that are uncharacteristic of the original organism.
GDO technology in Turkey has come under attack, with claims that it will result in tomatoes that taste of fish and chicken that smells like banana.

gecekondu
  • a house (usually associated with the poorest population) that is put up quickly without the proper permissions, a squatter's house
  • a shack of a house, a shanty
  • lit. a night condo
  • By law, these squatter-homes are supposed to be knocked down as soon as they are discovered. But the responsiblity for that falls to the local mayor's office. And these local mayors often 'look the other way' -- in return for the squatter's vote in the next election. Thus have great swaths of squatter villages arisen in the hills around Istanbul, Ankara, and Izmir -- and just about anywhere you care to look (including in the hills around the Aegean seaside resort town of Gümüldür, where your webmasters live).

In the news: 17 March 2004...Istanbul 'Gecekondu Research Study' reveals surprising demographic data! Apart from the fact that women head the households of 75% of Istanbul's gecekondus (according to the Chamber of Commerce study), the study also revealed that...

  • 65% of squatters use credit cards
  • squatters own cars -- a favorite make is Renault
  • they like Turkish Rap and Arabesque music
  • they won't purchase a newspaper, but they'll read one if it's free
  • their favorite TV channels are TGRT, Kanal D, ATV, and Show
  • 46% of squatters buy second-hand clothes
  • 35% go to the cinema to see the latest films
  • 13% go to the legitimate theater
  • Gecekondu voters determined the winner in many of the March 2004 local elections...
    Hürriyet Gazetesi, 17 March 2004
(For more surprising revelations, see the article at left.)
  • Gelibolu Gallipoli --
seaport and manufacturing town in Çanakkale province, Turkey (European-side). Located at entrance to the Sea of Marmara, at the head of The Dardanelles.
Ancient name, Calilipolis -- first colonized by Greeks; was a midieval trading center; was the first European conquest of the Ottoman Turks in 1354, during the reign of 'Sultan' Orhan.

    Gelibolu Yarımadası Gallipoli Peninsula --
the narrow tongue of land (63 miles long) extending SW from the S coast of Turkey (European-side), between the Dardanelles on the SE and the Saros Gulf and Aegean Sea on the NW and W.50
...was the scene of fierce battles in WW I during 1915-16, in conjunction with naval bombardment of Dardenelles forts. Allied troops (mainly Anzacs) landed 25 April 1915 -- the peninsula was defended (mainly) by Turkish forces led by Mustafa Kemal (Atatürk); there was severe fighting at Kirte, Sair Bair, Sulva Bay (now called Anafarta Bay). Unsuccessful Allied advance led to withdrawal 8 January 1916.50

Only 15% of their income comes from production activities that they can control." Gözcü Gazetesi, 15 July 2003

  • Türk Genelkurmay Başkanı Hilmi Özkök; Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff of Turkey (in 2003-4)
In the news: 1 January 2004...He may have needed a nudge from a subordinate, but when Orgeneral (and Genelkurmay Başkanı) Hilmi Özkök finally reacted today it was to express his 'deep concern' about recent events involving high-profile political officials. He singled out for special attention a) AKP representative Husrev Kutlu -- for his recent disparaging remarks concerning an Atatürk portrait and the famed Turkish Parliamentary Guards (Muhafız Taburu), and b) BBP Leader, Muhsin Yazıcıoğlu -- for his atavistic 'beard kissing' of a controversial Muslim elder during a funeral ceremony two days ago at Istanbul's (in)famous Fatih Cami. See photo-articles at left. 2 January 2003... After hasty behind the scenes consultations, Prime Minister Erdoğan decried yesterday's news reporting, saying, "Nothing can come between the Government and the Army." And, a spokesperson for Husrev Kutlu said, "He didn't mean what he said intentionally." Also, despite the eye-witness confirmations and the apparent photographic evidence, Muhsin Yazıcıoğlu said he didn't kiss anybody's beard. Are these religious-right politicians telling the truth or just practicing 'takiye'?

  • In the news: 9 June 2005 -- The new TCK with its stricter media-constraints (which had been forced through the Turkish parliament by the AKP religious-right majority party) came into effect 1 June and has already snagged its first newspaper reporter victim -- which has sent shivers down the collective spine of the entire Turkish news media. As shown below and at left, media response has been swift, with dire warnings of dangerous governmental control over Turkish news outlets.

  • In the news: Sins of the father, visited on the (female) daughter (only)? Saime Öncel's daddy taught her how to do the Arabic and Ottoman religious hat, a couple years before he died quite unexpectedly. And, out of necessity, in order to earn 'bread money' for her surviving family, Saime began selling her calligraphic wall-hangings to Bursa's numerous cami's -- for display as devout 'reminders' to the faithful. But, as Saime explains, "When certain people found out I was a woman, they said my work was sinful and that I should stop. I tried to resist, but soon found myself unemployed." So Saime dropped the e-letter from her female given-name and began signing her work as Saim -- which is the male counterpart name to Saime. That seemed to do the trick -- and she's back now, earning 'bread money' for her needy family. Still, she may be working on borrowed time... only until those same 'certain people' discover her ruse. We opine that Saime's pose for the photo-article at left may not have helped her 'undercover' cause. oh well, fame is a powerful drug...Hürriyet Gazetesi, 21 May 2005
