the Dardanelles
(the Hellespont)

WWI historical note:
18 March 1915 -- the date of the initial massed naval-attack on the Dardanelles (near the Çanakkale fortress) by about 30 British, French, Russian Alliance warships - which was rebuffed by Turkish and German land-batteries and mines. The French battleship Bouvet and the British battleships Irresistible and Ocean were sunk during the attack. [See contour-map at right.]

  • In the news: 23 August 2003 -- Çankaya thwarts AKP designs...With his second veto a couple of days ago of the AKP-sponsored Forests Bill, the Turkish President (Ahmet Necdet Sezer) has further angered the ruling AKP majority-government. (Sezer has already vetoed 12 AKP-sponsored bills this legislative session.) But when furious AKP officials threatened to seek a national referendum on the matter, political observers opined that a public vote would be the downfall of the AKP government. That's because, observers say, the AKP is a majority party  'in name only'. (Due to a flaw in the Turkish voting system, the AKP was able to become the ruling majority party even though it only captured 35% of the vote in the November 2002 national elections.) So, observers say, if the AKP seeks a national referendum, it'll likely be defeated -- because even voters who might favor the Forests Bill would vote against it, as a means of demonstrating their strong anti-AKP sentiments.
