A Summing Up
In Part 9, we wrapped up our review of the Zerrin Egeliler erotik comedy movie Şillik (Painted Jezebel), directed by Ülkü Erakalın in 1979. So now that you've seen the Queen of Erotik Turkish Movies in both a magical comedy and a slash-and-burn action-drama (Kadersizler - The Unfortunate Ones), we're almost done with our exposition... But, just before we go...
Movies and Remembrances Think back, dear reader...If you were alive in 1978-1979, what were you doing back then? Well, if you're anything like Zerrin Egeliler, you were making a lot of erotik movies...58 of them to be exact. Egeliler's banner year was 1979 in which she made 37 erotic movies -- one complete movie every 10 days, for a whole year! And that's a film-making record, friends -- which isn't likely to be broken any time soon... Born in 1952 (and married for the first time at age 14), Egeliler is reportedly now happily re-married, living with her current husband [Fahri Bahci (or Balci)] -- who is/was the owner of the Kösk Gazino in Bursa -- one of Turkey's most religiously conservative cities. But, as you can imagine, things weren't always so tranquil for her... As Cihan Demirci says in his wonderful book of remembrances from The Golden Age of Turkish Erotik Movies, Zerrin Egeliler may have started her film-career with the surname Egeliler but she ended it with the bawdy moniker, Memeliler... a 'gift' from her fans, which translated into English means something like Boobs. Some of those fans extended the moniker even further... making it Kocamemeliler -- so that Zerrin Egeliler became known as Zerrin Big Boobs. We don't know whether that bawdy nickname caused Egeliler any heartache in 1979 or not, but we suspect that she 'cried all the way to the bank' -- a la Liberace, who had coined the phrase 20 years earlier. ~~~~~~~~~
From The Cutting Room Floor We'll leave you now with these two final Egeliler movie 'bonuses'. 1) A doctored movie-clip collage (a 1.7MB Windows Media .WMV file) in which Zerrin Egeliler appears in a familiar role -- that of an 'unsatisfied woman'... in three different films! Şehvet Uçurumu (Precipice of Lust), Minnoş (Darling Mine), and Rezalet (Disgraceful). In the latter film-clip from Disgraceful, Egeliler provides the 'incentive' for a malleable businessman (Turgut Özatay) to give an interest-free loan to her hubby (Yüksel Gözen). 2) A Trivial Pursuit background-story that you'll probably never need. The Film That Never Was Cihan Demirci's book, Araya Parca Giren Yillar149 contains this bit of erotik movie trivia... According to Demirci, somewhere out there in Turkish movie-land there exists an erotik film entitled Canım Benim (My Dear One) made in 1979, that co-stars Zerrin Egeliler and Sermet Serdengeçti. Note: A literal translation of the Demirci book-title (Araya Parca Giren Yillar) isn't very informative -- unless you're Turkish, of course. Literally, it means something like, The Years That Parts Entered Into The Spaces. The title's full-blown figurative meaning is a lot more meaningful to us English-speakers. That meaning is something like: 'My Recollections Of The Years During Which Real-Seks Foreign Film Clips Were Inserted Between Simulated-Seks Scenes In Turkish Erotik Movies.' The existence of a movie co-starring Egeliler & Serdengeçti may not seem surprising on the surface, since both names are well-known in erotik-genre movies. But those two never appeared together in a film. Not in 1979, nor in any other year. The movie in which they seem to appear together is nothing more than a very cleverly done montage. Since Serdengeçti was killed in an auto accident in December 1976 -- a film featuring Egeliler and Serdengeçti in 1979 is an impossibility. A couple of asides... 1) There was a film made in 1979 called Canım Benim that was directed by Engin Temizer. And it starred Zerrin Egeliler. But Zerrin's co-star in the movie wasn't Serdengeçti - it was Tevfik Şen. 2) Before Serdengeçti starred in his first erotik movie Beş Tavuk Bir Horoz (Five Chickens and A Rooster) in 1974, he was a highly-regarded 'permanent' cast member of the Ankara Devlet Tiyatrosu (The National Stage Theater of Turkey). But then Yeşilcam (Turkey's Hollywood) beckoned and he got the offer to make erotik movies. Yup... It seems that money talked just as loudly back then as it does now.
