Zerrin's Memorable Movies
Zerrin Egeliler made a ton of movies in a very short time And, in one sense, all of her movies are 'memorable'... because they all helped establish her as the premier female 'erotik' film star of Turkey. She was the highest paid one too... surpassing Zafir Seba's $10,000 per movie (at a time when per family Turkish incomes were less than $1,000 a year). Zerrin Egeliler made 60+ movies in her short career. Her earnings for 60+ movies in that era were... Well, even if we use Zafir Seba's low-ball $10,000 per movie figure, Egeliler's earnings still amount to more than the earnings of more than 60,000 Turkish families living in that era! Yes, Egeliler made a small number of conventional films, such a Dila Hanım in 1977 (see movie poster above left). But let's be honest...if those conventional movies were the only mark she left on the Turkish Cinema, it would be a miniscule mark. Eroticism was the name of her game, and she won it hands down... So let's dip into the overflowing treasure trove of Zerrin Egeliler 'erotik' films -- and see what we come out with... Kadersizler (The Unfortunate Ones) -- 1979
This 1979 movie is not what we'd call a typical erotik Turkish film. In fact it doesn't contain one erotik scene until the film is more than one-third done. It's more a morality play than anything else... The film opens with three suburban neighborhood pals in the local automobile junk yard, bargaining with the yard's owner for used parts -- from which they plan to build themselves some kind of makeshift transportation. You recognize them as Kazım Kartal [acting the part of Kedi Salih], Sümer Tilmaç (as Pendikli Deli Ferhat), and Mehmet Özden (as Tarak Niyazi). And, you quickly understand that they are nearly-harmless small time grifters, living a hand-to-mouth-existence. The trio might have been decent folk, given different circumstances. But, that's not to be... To establish a sense of the film's bleakness, Director Aykut Düz has Niyazi visibly 'make water' during the movie's opening scene (facing away at a 3/4 angle) -- and we soon learn that Salih is short of cash and that Deli Ferhat just got out of jail/gaol. Niyazi, who's never had a lover in his life, can't stop bragging about his many 'conquests'. As the plot unwinds, we learn that Salih lives in a gecekondo on the outskirts of town with his beloved daughter Sevgi (played by Begüm Bahar) -- and that Salih's pal Deli Ferhat is in love with her (and she with him), all unbeknownst to her dad. When Deli Ferhat catches an overweight real-estate agent sniffing up Begüm's skirt, he goes berserk and beats the bejeezus out of him -- and robs him to boot. When the police arrive, Fatso is too terrified to testify against Deli Ferhat -- so life goes on as usual, until... One day (about 20 minutes into the movie) our threesome of small-time crooks gets word that some 'big time operators' are moving into their territory from Malatya -- offering gambling and prostitution to the local population. These Big Timers are led by Turkish Mafia boss Malatyalı Sabri (Oktar Durukan) -- with the madame known as Hacıhüsrevli Lüks Şermin (Zerrin Egeliler), at his side. At that point, the movie takes a strong turn toward violence, eroticism, and tragedy... In Part 5, More of Zerrin Egeliler's Memorable Movies -- wrapping up the tragic morality movie, Kadersizler (The Unfortunate Ones)...
