"My first movie was Evlat Uğruna (For The Sake Of The Child) in 1967." Note: Movie-history records show that Cansel actually made 4 other movies before she appeared in Evlat Uğruna in 1967 -- her first actual acting part being in Kan Ve Gurur (Blood And Pride), a conventional movie, made in 1964. So, whether Cansel's memory failed her at the time of the Demirci interview or whether she didn't feel those previous movies were worthy of recognition -- or whether she simply wanted to confuse fans about her age...is something we'll never know. "At the time I contracted to make For The Sake Of The Child I had one pair of shoes to my name -- and I was the main source of income to support my child and family." [Ed. Daughter Zümrut was the result of teenager Cansel's 'marriage of convenience' (to a kapıcı in Istanbul) -- that she legalized upon her return to Turkey from England where she had received training as a hair-dresser in the early 1960s. As wife of a full-fledged Turkish citizen, Cansel (who was Kıbrıslı you'll remember) could work without restriction in Turkey. Which is how she became a stripper in the first place.] "I was really attracted to the movie business, but because I'd been in trouble previously, I couldn't find my way in initially. But there was good-paying work available for women who'd strip on stage -- so that's what I did. I had next to nothing when I started -- stripping was the only gainful employment I could find at the time. Then, when I began to be noticed -- the movie people came looking for me. At first, my movie roles were modest and my pay was only enough to make ends meet. But, as my popularity grew so did my paychecks. And, up to now I've co-starred with every major male movie-star except Tarık Akan. Now I own a nice flat, a new car -- and I've got real money in the bank. What's more, I've begun to have more say about the roles I play. I've even got movie makers to agree that I don't need to fully disrobe anymore."
That was 1978, and Feri Cansel seemed to have the world on string. But then the string began to unravel...
