Turkish Actress -- Conventional and Erotik Feri Cansel Shades of Juanita Dale Slusher (Candy Barr) Young Feriha Cansel pranced into Istanbul in the early 1960's exhibiting nearly the same prerequisites for future stardom as the young Juanita Dale Slusher had exhibited -- at the time of her arrival in Dallas in the early 1950's. To wit... both teenagers had sensuous baby-doll faces -- and both faces were attached to dyn-o-mite bodies of voluptuous full-blooded women. Furthermore, both women were driven by deep-seated desire to rise above humble origins, to better themselves, to wangle their 'piece of the pie' -- in just about any way they could. Feriha was a köylü from central Kıbrıs and Juanita a hayseed from south Texas -- and, although 10,000 miles and 10 years separated the pair from being contemporaries, both young woman had a similarly profound effect on the big cities to which they'd been attracted. Not surprisingly, they both got their first big 'break' while they were strippers -- Cansel in Istanbul, Slusher in Dallas. Slusher, you may recall, 'starred' in the most notorious stag film ever made, Smart Alec, released in 1951 -- back when Slusher was very much an underaged 'actress', just 16 years old. There's still a debate about whether of not Slusher suffered angst as a result of her performance in Smart Alec. Slusher never claimed it -- though she did say she regretted making the film. One thing is certain though... after Slusher appeared in Smart Alec as Candy Barr, she was thereafter in constant (and lucrative) demand as a burlesque stripper for damn near the rest of her life. In her heyday (during a multi-year stint from the mid to late 1950's) she worked under contract for more than $2000 a week. And she didn't finally hang up her g-string for good until 1998 -- after 'bringing the house down' one last time... with a show-stopping burlesque performance at the Ruby Room in Dallas -- when she was 62 years young!
