| Are Secretary of State Rice and PM Erdoğan really 'kissing cousins'?
It might seem so from the political cartoon that appeared in Sabah Gazetesi (The Morning Newspaper) yesterday. Until you look into the cartoon's two levels of meaning...
As the Secretary of State busses the PM, out pops his thought-balloon with its literal meaning of, "It's not festival time, it's not a pleasure trip, [so] why did my uncle's wife kiss me?" -- which mimics the longish Turkish idiom you may already know. But the actual, figurative meaning is, "There must be something behind this." And so there was. Because the Secretary of State's real purpose for coming to Ankara yesterday was to gain Turkish support for future military actions in Iraq and, more significantly, in case of War with Iran. Now the question is...If the Secretary of State succeeded in getting what she wanted (behind closed doors), then what did the Prime Minister get in return? Like, for instance... US help in eradicating PKK terrorists in Northern Iraq? Because if the answer is 'nothing', he's in for some serious buffeting by political opponents and in the Turkish media. And, in the Turkish public's eyes, the Secretary of State's visit will have been an embarrassing waste of time. |
