The Ten Best Movies in Turkish Cinematic History
On Friday's... Hürriyet Newspaper publishes a supplemental section simply entitled CUMA; FRIDAY -- and, for as long as we can remember, it has always included a lead article selection of "The 10 Best Turkish" this or "The 10 Best Turkish" that. It's an appealing (and eclectic) series of selections, and we check it out, religiously, every week -- sometimes incorporating what we find there into the pages of your favorite language learning website. (You know the one we mean, don't you?) For example, we've highlighted the 10 Best Turkish Cheeses, the 10 Best Turkish Pide Bread Purveyors, the 10 Best Turkish Pizza Parlors, the 10 Best Turkish Wines, etc. on our Turkish Food pages -- on several past occasions. Recently, because of our interest in Turkish movies of almost every stripe, we were again attracted to Hurriyet's CUMA supplement, which this time contained the full-page article, "The 10 Best Turkish Films of All Time" (See the complete Top 10 movie list above, right).
The jury that selected the 10 best movies for the article was made up of distinguished Turkish movie critics and writers (7 men -- and 3 women, one of whom, Nihal Bengisu Karaca, is a tesettürlü member in good standing of SİYAD [Sinema Yazarları Derneği] -- Turkey's Cinema Writers Association). We feel that the jury's 10 best movies selection was a little top heavy in favor of more recent Turkish films, but we don't disagree strongly with the list -- because it did at least include such vintage Turkish film classics as Sevmek Zamanı; Time to Love (1971) and Yol; The Road (1981)... and, it also included one of our favorite tear-jerker Turkish love story movies 'Selvi Boylum Al Yazmalım' (released in 1977) which starred Türkan Şoray, Kadir İnanır, and Ahmet Mekin. Selvi Boylum Al Yazmalım The title, which is surely untranslatable without help from a Turkish friend, literally means something like, "My Very Tall Man, My Woman in the Fringe-decorated Red-tinged Head-cloth". [Translation Hints: A selvi is an elongated Mediterranean cypress tree, boylu means tall, al (in this case) means 'red', and a yazma (in this case) refers to the scarf-like cloth that Turkish village girls first decorate along the edge -- and then wear over their heads.] The 'very tall man' of the title is Kadir İnanır, of course, and the woman, Türkan Şoray. But, usually, the film's title in English is greatly simplified... seen as "The Girl with the Red Scarf".
