    When these suffixes are attached to nouns, the newly formed words become new nouns that usually (though not always) designate a person's profession, his/her [place of] business, occupation, personal pursuit, or pastime activity.

    Note: Occasionally, these suffixes are also added to adjectives or adverbs -- to produce new nouns with 'occupational' meaning.
    For example:

  • eski old
  • eskici  junkman,
    rag-and-bone-man

    Exception arising from ordinal numbers (birinci, ikinci, üçüncü, etc...):

  • Although altın means gold, altıncı does not mean goldsmith. It means sixth. (The meaning of goldsmith is altın kuyumcusu.)

    • benzin gas/petrol
      benzinci a gas/petrol-station attendant, a gas/petrol filling station
    • futbol a football/soccer ball, the game of football/soccer
      futbolcu a football player

    • bilet a ticket
      biletçi a ticket seller
    • hukuk [the] law, jurisprudence
      hukukçu a jurist
