When I visited the States in 1975 after living and working in Europe for 7 years, my sister Hillary jokingly told me that I reminded her of The Fonz...And I had no idea what she was talking about.
And when Peri visited Turkey after living in the States continuously between 1976 and 1979, she drew a total blank when her brother began referring to the 1978 Riots in Maraş. There was almost no Stateside access to Turkish News back then, so her knowledge of those riotous events (which had left more than 100 dead), was nil. And she was completely in the dark about the significance of her brother's words.
As those two mini-stories illustrate, Peri and I had both been victims of 'Over-The-Hill Language Syndrome', in which our native-language knowledge (and fluency) became out of date, in a hurry -- very soon after we left our native lands.
Such experiences have taught us that there's a lot more to learning a language (especially the Turkish language) than just becoming familiar with its grammar and vocabulary. Equally important, we opine, is a knowledge of the country's geography and current events, its ancient history and culture, its people (especially its celebrities past and present), the food they eat, the music they make, the way they express love, what makes them laugh, and what movies and TV/radio they watch (and listen to) for entertainment, news, and education. Only when we consider all the above-mentioned together as a 'language-learning package', will we truly be able to understand Turkish.
In keeping with the needs of the latter item on the list above, LPT hereby presents its latest work in progress, The Whole Earth Catalog of Turkish Movies/Films, Short Subjects, Documentaries, TV and Radio -- for English Speakers...which we'll abridge to 'The Turkish Movies, etc. Catalog'...
Yes, you're right... There aren't many entires in the 'Turkish Movies, etc. Catalog' yet. But remember that, "Great oaks from little acorns grow." And if you'll lend us your encouragement or your helping hands (or both), then the 'Turkish Movies, etc. Catalog' (like the oak tree) will grow to reasonable 'height and girth' in no time at all.
So if you have an interest in or knowledge of Turkish Movie/Films, etc. -- then we'd love to hear from you. And, if you don't mind sharing your knowledge with your fellow LPT site visitors, then we'd like to add your ideas, your writings (large, medium, or small), your pictures, voice recordings, videos, etc. to the online English-language 'Turkish Movies, etc. Catalog' -- along with our heartfelt acknowledgement of appreciation for your contribution, right next to it.
Anyone feel like being our first kindly volunteer contributor?...
