Ed. Up through Süleyman's reign, Janissaries were recruited either from non-Muslim prisoners of war or from the sons of non-Muslims living in Ottoman territories -- mostly the Balkans. Free-born Muslims were forbidden from becoming Janissaries (until after Süleyman's reign) -- for fear their loyalty to the Sultan might be compromised.
