Not An Exception To A Turkish Grammar Rule

Peri and I were watching the family drama TV series Yaprak Dökünü (Falling Leaves) last night when the younger teenaged sister of the family said to her older married sister (something like): If I win the Lotto, I'll buy you a new car. The older sister countered (something like): You shouldn't make promises you can't keep. And the younger sister quickly qualified her generosity, saying: "If"... I said... "if!" And a light-bulb lit up in my head...

Countdown To A Turkish Secularist's Nightmare --
Presidential Selection Day -- 15 May 2007

Secular Turks Don't Want Recep Tayyip Erdoğan as their next President: Secular columnist Bekir Coşkun had this to say in Thursday's Hürriyet Gazetesi (figuratively translated): "I don't care about his rosy, good-news forecasts that Turkey will soon be a 'Star Country'. I care about what happened last week in Kırıkkale...While promoting his AKP population-growth program (in contradiction to worldwide concern about over-population), he spoke with a woman who said, "I already have a child." PM Erdoğan replied, "One is not enough. Keep going. Don't stop at the number you can manage, continue until you can't have any more." I don't want such a man to be Turkish President."

In A League Of Her Own --
with initial 'Cover Girl Gams' video 1/2
3/4

The Takvim Gazetesi article gave the impression that Hülya Avşar was completely unconcerned about and unaffected by cellulite photos taken of her during a recent tennis exhibition match -- which were subsequently published in at least two daily newspapers in March. That didn't last very long...

In A League Of Her Own --
with impressive 'Poolside Strut' video
2/4

The mainstream Turkish newspapers had a field day reporting "Hülya Avşar's First Frikik" -- which has become an Annual Rite of Spring. Following Gözcü, came Takvim Gazetesi -- whose reporters consulted five of Turkey's top female celebrities before presenting its own photo-heavy 2-part perspective, the very next day...

Hülya Avşar -- In A League Of Her Own
1/4

You know it's spring in Turkey when Hülya Avşar starts giving frikik. So on March 27th, when we opened Gözcü Gazetesi to page 2 and caught a glimpse of Hülya's silk undies beneath a micro-mini tennis skirt, we knew it was safe to begin peeling off our winter-weather gear. Another Turkish spring had sprung. But we weren't fully prepared for what happened next...
