Microsoft Internet Explorer and the 'also rans'
One of the many interesting bits of information provided by our website statistics application (CPanel) is that more than 11% of LPT's English-speaking site-visitors use the Firefox browser -- which puts that browser in distant (but still respectable) second place behind Internet Explorer in popularity among our site-visitors. Those two browsers together account for almost...

Turkish Translations
Unless you're tuned into the actual subject of a verbal (or written) exchange in Turkish, you can easily be confused about what is really being said -- and completely botch the translation. The main reason for the problem (we opine) is...

Guide to Turkish Ice Cream -- Part 2
"Well why didn't you pack a good-sized cooler with ice -- and use it to bring 10 or 12 boxes of ice-cream at a time from big-city Izmir?" A good idea, definitely. Because if we could get the ice-cream home unmelted, we did have a reliable mini-freezer -- that could accept a dozen liter boxes of ice-cream at a time. But...

Alternative Turkish Vacations and Holidays
In Çeşme (near Izmir along the Aegean Seacoast), we tried the camp belonging to the Et and Balık Kurumu Association. The daily price for basic accommodation, including 3 meals a day was 23 YTL (around US$15, £8, €12 Euro). For an upgraded suite-style room, the price (with 3-meals-included) increased to 34 YTL (around US$21, £12, €17)...

Internet Survival Kit -- Part 1 Supplement
Living here, so remote from any individualized Customer Support (or Customer Complaint) possibility, it seems much more 'personal' when software developers send us (or 'Live Update' us) a new bug-infested version -- and leave us to scramble when it doesn't work. Even worse is when a new software version appears to work (at least for its 'announced purpose') but later turns out to be responsible for one or more nasty (and seemingly unrelated) problems that cause our delicately balanced computer system to 'go south'...

Turkish personal-names, baby-names, and surnames
According to the latest statistics gathered and published by the
Turkish Citizenship Bureau's Directorate, there are now 1,537,458 males named Mehmet among living males in Turkey. The personal-name Mustafa follows 'Mehmet' with 1,195,232 recorded occurrences -- then come...

The Turkish Lira's slide continues (and the holiday discounts heat up!)
Any way to look at it, that's a loss in the Lira's value since May 8 of about 18%. This drop in value provides a financial windfall opportunity for you prospective tourists out there -- to realize a substantial cash-money discount on the Turkish portion of your holiday-booking and anything you buy here while vacationing...

A Whopper of a Turkish TV Blooper
Going for a-big-horse-laugh, Mehmet Ali lined up several of the male stage-hands and had them raise their hands over their heads. He then went behind one of men, Hilmi Bey, and yanked his pants down while the Live TV cameras whirred. Trouble is...

Aubergine "Tongue Sugar"
Not everyone likes aubergine, I know. But I've been making this dish since I first learned to cook in my late teens -- and after I introduced it in the States to my beloved American mother and sister-in-law, it became their 'favorite vegetable dish', bar none...

It happenened at the World Cup...
On what looked almost like a set play, Ilhan Mansız opened the Turkey-Korea match from the midfield kickoff spot with a forward ball to Hakan Şükür who wrong-footed the Korean World Cup defenseman Hong Myung-bo. Şükür then quickly banged the ball left-footed past the goalkeeper from 50 feet...

Habibullah's Guide to Turkish Ice Cream
Neither of us are big sweet eaters -- except that I like ice cream... a lot. So much so that, when I sit down to have some, I consume a box at a time, whether that be a pint, a quart (or a liter) -- or even a half-gallon of ice cream when I'm going strong. Once the box is open, like Pandora's, I can't close it again until it's empty...

Internet Survival Kit for Turkey -- Part 1
There are
two sources of Internet problems in Turkey -- those of big city origin and those of small city origin. Because we live remotely down here on the beach in small-city Gümüldür, both types can strike us without warning. This past Friday afternoon, for instance...
