A beautiful Turkish Supermodel learns about life, behind bars... Is Tarty Tuğba Turning Tranquil?
Still in jail/gaol after nearly 5 months, the beautiful (and controversial) Turkish Supermodel/actress Tuğba Özay spoke from prison on Beyaz Öztürk's live national television show earlier this week (see article above right). And she aroused tearful nods of sympathy from the viewing audience when she said, "I've learned a lot about life here in prison. These four and a half months have been an extraordinary experience. The day I get out, I'll let fly a white dove."
As we wrote waaay back in July 2005, "In the aftermath of her being arrested together with mafia-boyfriend (and fugitive from justice) Kürsat Yılmaz, haughty Supermodel Tuğba Özay was steaming-mad when arraigned yesterday at a pre-trial hearing. The state prosecutor's office revealed that it is seeking an 8 year jail term for the sexy model -- for harbouring a known criminal. Tuğba's (unconvincing) reply to the charge? 'I didn't know that Kürsat Bey was on the run.'"
Now, here we are in the fading days of 2007, and Tuğba's court-case is still not resolved. Why is that?
Well...initially, it was because her lawyers tied up the judicial process with numerous pre-trial motions relating to the original
'consorting with a known criminal charge'. That kept her court-case in limbo and Tuğba Hanım out of custody for 2 full years, during which time her Supermodeling fees went through the roof -- and BBC World featured her twice in TV documentaries about Turkish fashion-modeling and textiles.
But in August 2007 the Supermodel got into even deeper trouble, when police learned
(through a telephone wire tap) that she was conspiring with a new mafia male-friend to help end her relationship with former
mafia male-friend Kürsat Yılmaz (from 2005). And, she apparently spoke in such a way on tape
that police understood her to be making a 'hit contract' on Yılmaz's life.
So, at that point (August 2007), police took her into custody for 'hiring a contract killer'. The original 'consorting with a known criminal' charge (from 2005) is still pending.
Could she really spend the next eight years (or more) in prison?
Eight years is what the prosecution is asking for -- just in the first case. So, it is possible she could face a lengthy prison stay. But, she's not guilty until proven so in Turkish court -- and, as usual, everything is
subject to pre-trial negotiation.
Poor Tuğba. It's too bad, too sad.
Well, 'Yes' it is...But also 'No' it isn't. It's 'Yes' because...it's too bad and sad whenever any attractive young man/woman with a bright future gets into trouble, regardless of his/her celebrity. But it's also 'No' because... this particular attractive young Supermodel has a
history of bad behavior combined with a bad temper -- someone who
lived life according to her own rules.
For a example, about 5
years ago, she threw a screaming fit in Izmir Airport at a customs-official who discovered her trying to bring in more than her limit of
duty free goods. She attacked and slapped the guy, and had to be
restrained. That case against her is still pending too!
She's also vociferous in her criticism of competitive models, for no
apparent reason -- her nasty statements are printed frequently in the
newspapers. She once 'ratted' to the police that two of her
competitors where throwing a party, in which sex was for sale -- and
the competitors were brought to trial (before being quickly acquitted). So she
hasn't got many female friends among celebrity peers...
Further, many of her past public (and semi-public) photo shoots have been in poor taste for a Supermodel, bordering on being vulgar. Recently, for example, an anonymous someone sent us a set of JPG photos (taken this year) of what appears to be Tuğba Hanım baring all (see our PG-rated rendition of those JPGs below). From our
observation, the photos seem to be authentic...if they are fake
photos, they are extremely good fakes.
So... she's been walking a thin combative line of her own choosing for a number of
years, as her Supermodel status and payscale has increased by leaps and bounds -- pulled along by her notoriety. And maybe it's payback time for her...
We still think she could get off lightly, once she finally goes to trial. She's got the best lawyers
money can buy, and except for the alleged 'hit contract' against her
former lover, the various allegations and charges against her aren't
that serious. She may have been a conceited pain-in-the-butt big-mouth tart all these years, but there's no law against that in Turkey... yet.
But, stay tuned. This story has more 'juice' left in it.
