Queen of Turkish Marketeers In Part 3 of this series, Sabah Gazetesi told us that Hülya Hanım was angry at the media -- after newspapers published unflattering cellulite photos of her (taken during an exhibition tennis match in late March). To get even with news photographers for the cellulite photos, she placed limits on reporters and appeared tesettürlü for a subsequent tennis exhibition match on April Fools Day. "This is the way I'll dress from now on for all of my public tennis matches," she announced sardonically. And you would have thought that would put the matter to rest -- for this season anyway. But there was one last word that needed saying (we suppose) -- and Turkey's best selling daily newspaper, Posta Gazetesi, got the honors. On April 4nd, Posta published the mini-article seen at above right -- in which columnist Erdoğan Aktaş stated the obvious and declared Hülya Hanım, "Turkish Queen o the Marketing May" -- for her shrewd self-promotional skills. Article Headline: Hülya Avşar, The Queen of Marketing Expertise The article: She's proved it once again and I give her full credit. When it comes to the subject of self-marketing, Hülya Avşar is a First-Rate Pro. She is [almost] as good as Victoria Beckham (who transformed footballer-husband David Beckham into a World-wide celebrity). Everyone agrees that Victoria Beckham has extraordinary natural marketing skills. And, in my opinion, Hülya Avşar's marketing abilities are equally impressive. For example... Of course Hülya Avşar was aware of her seasonal cellulite condition. But she knowingly went in front of cameras -- to play an exhibition tennis match anyway. The result? Everyone in the press (and in the public) got into heated discussion about Hülya Hanım's cellulite. At first she kept quiet about all the public hoo-hah. But then, for the purpose of increasing her public exposure further, she appeared tesettürlü at the Tennis Match on April Fools day. And once again, she became the number one topic of conversation on TV news and talk shows -- and in the paper media (newspapers and magazines). And none of this publicity cost her one kuruş in advertising fees... Some in the media have criticized the way she get's her publicity, but Hülya Avşar has become an iconic Turkish trademark (as she continues to successfully publicize herself for free) -- because of her astute marketing skills.
