Girl Fight!!
Newspaper Columnist Ayşe Arman
'takes the gloves off' against
Beauty and Entertainment Queen Hülya Avşar

We mentioned way back in May (in our blog at: http://www.learningpracticalturkish.com/beauty--006-05-25.html) that beauty and entertainment queen Hülya Hanım has had her detractors. But it wasn't until recently that they began lining up against her in such numbers. And they don't mind playing rough either.

For instance, the well-respected (and usually liberal-minded) female newspaper columnist Ayşe Arman (see photo at upper left) led off her anti-Avşar column in late September saying, "I don't descend to Hülya Avşar's low class!"

That remark came after a series of exchanges between columnist Arman and the loose-lipped entertainer that began when Hülya Hanım made the politically charged statement that, "Turks who want to create a separate state should go ahead and do so. Let them live the way they want to live. For example, if Kurds want to establish a Kurdish state... it's similar to Turkey's desire to join the European Union."

When she heard Hülya Hanım's remark, Arman riposted, "There are some people in show-business whose mouth-zipper is broken!"

Arman added, "Hülya Hanım should stick to what she's good at...beauty, acting, singing, entertaining -- and being cute. But when it comes to political subjects, especially heavy political issues...then I say, 'Hülya... Keep away, woman!'"

These words naturally upset Hülya Hanım, and she came back with a salvo of her own. "Ayşe Arman writes too much about sex in her newspaper column. She's got lovemaking, and such, on the brain. Well, she also practices what she preaches. She enticed the husband of a woman-friend of mine -- and broke up the couple's marriage. If I enter politics, I'll appoint Ayşe Hanım as the Minister Responsible for Breaking Up Happy Marriages."

And in Arman's news-column the next day entitled, "Look At This Nasty Talk" Ayşe retorted, "I've learned moral lessons from almost everyone I know -- at one time or another. The one exception is Hülya Avşar...who, with a personal history like hers, has nothing to teach me or anyone else -- in the morals department."

Arman concluded..."I suppose dear readers, that you're expecting me to fire back at Hülya Hanım, aren't you...? Well, I'm afraid I'm going to disappoint...and leave her talking to herself in the gutter where she belongs!"

And it's not just Newspaper Columnists who've been having a field day with Hülya Hanım lately. Her peers in the entertainment-business too are joining ranks against her...

I read your blog regularly and I really enjoy it. I like the way you try to show different aspects of Turkey. But I have somethin' to ask...

Why do you keep talkin' about Hülya Avşar?? Most of your celebrity blogs about her say nothing new -- she's been actin' in this way since she first started performing on stage. I don't wanna belittle her but I think there are other celebrities who really deserve being mentioned in your blog.

I read the site-visitor 'Comment' which was complainin' of Hülya and Seda for actin' like walkin' encyclopedias (see http://www.turkish.com/arts-and-entertainment--006-10-07.html). I wanna say, 'Yes', that is true... but Seda Sayan deserves bein' like that sometimes. She never acts like the world is turnin' just for her, but Hülya always acts like that.

Besides... why don't you mention the financial aid that Sayan provides needy people, instead of concentrating on Hülya's absurd words? For example, Sayan took responsibility for the full finacial support of a torture victim -- and she frequently does such things. Even if these are publicity stunts (as we say, a kind of reklam), she is very charitable. I don't wanna stick up for her or try to spoil Hülya's fame. I just wanna express some truths about these two celebrities. I'll be happy if you use my comment on your page.

Maybe we have given Hülya Avşar too much attention recently, Yaşar... But it seems like every time we pick up a newspaper, there she is again, getting herself into yet another embarrassing situation... for yet another surprising reason -- at least surprising to us. It's the mind-numbing variety of Hülya's embarassing problems that has attracted our attention! But you could be right -- perhaps we should give Hülya Hanım a rest for awhile. Though... it would help us, if she could just stay out of the gossip headlines for a day or two!

By the way, we did make favorable mention of Seda Sayan (and others) in a past blog-article (please see Media Names Turkey's #1 Entertainer) We'd welcome your further comment on the page too, if you have one.
